By Horace Palacio: A 61-year-old Belize City resident was shot and killed on Thursday night in what appears to be a targeted hit on Coney Drive.
Police say the victim was walking in the direction of Body 2000 Gym around 8:09 p.m., when two men on a motorcycle approached him near the corner of Coney Drive and Sunrise Avenue. One of the men pulled out a firearm and opened fire, hitting the victim multiple times.
Responding officers from the Crimes Investigation Branch (CIB) Northside found the man unresponsive at the scene. He was transported to the KHMH morgue, where he was officially pronounced dead at 9:29 p.m. by attending medical personnel.
The crime scene was processed, and several expended shell casings and blood swabs were collected as evidence. Police say they have spoken with multiple individuals who may have provided useful information.
An investigation is ongoing as authorities work to identify the shooters and determine the motive behind the killing.
