By Horace Palacio: Belize has reaffirmed its support for Cuban medical professionals working in the country, amid growing pressure from the United States, which has criticized such programs as a form of “forced labor.”

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Francis Fonseca, confirmed that the Belize government pays Cuban doctors directly and transparently—countering concerns that payments are funneled back to the Cuban state.

“We pay all those accounts, and their monies go into those accounts directly,” Fonseca stated, emphasizing that the Cuban doctors stationed in Belize have individual bank accounts and are not part of a centralized payment structure controlled by the Cuban government.

The comments come as the U.S. administration has reportedly questioned the nature of such agreements in various countries, including those in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). Fonseca explained that over 50 countries—including wealthy nations like Saudi Arabia—host Cuban medical brigades and that Belize’s partnership is no different.

“We responded with factual, accurate information,” Fonseca said. “They asked for transparency, and we delivered.”
