By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The 2025 Holy Saturday Cross Country Cycling Classic has entered another dramatic phase as a nine-man lead group has broken away from the pack, asserting control over the race following the grueling climb up Mount Hope in Unitedville.
Earlier, a strong 20-man group, including top Belizean riders Derrick Chavarria (G-Flow), Jyven Gonzalez (G-Flow), Carlton Robinson (A. Mahler Digi Alliance), Delton Rojas (Roolin Shattz), Cory Williams (Miami Blazers), Goran Ganourel (A. Mahler Digi Alliance), Giovanni Lovell (Lovell Cycling Team), and Steven Cabral (Cabral Marin Team), had established themselves among the frontrunners. International competitors such as Cory Lockwood (Miami Blazers), Alfredo Bueno (Legion of Los Angeles), Colombian David Abreo (Great Britain), Jim Brown (Miami Blazers), Canadian Jean Michel LaChance, and Colombians David Abreo and Uriel Espinoza were also setting the pace.
However, after Mount Hope, the race dynamics shifted, with José Alarcon, Oscar Quiroz, Cory Williams, David Abreo, Jean Michel LaChance, Uriel Espinoza, Derrick Chavarria, Patrick Raines, and Jim Brown surging ahead, breaking away from the other ten riders. This newly formed nine-man breakaway now holds the lead as they press forward toward Belize City.
There was a setback for Derrick Chavarria, who suffered a puncture at 9:00 am, forcing him to pull over and change his tire. Whether he can recover and rejoin the front remains to be seen. Meanwhile, the trailing riders and the peloton will need to organize themselves quickly if they hope to chase down the leaders.
The competition is reaching a critical point, and with each mile, the tension builds.
Latest reports say Chavarria was able to rejoin the group.
