By Horace Palacio: Following a rare and deeply concerning incident on Thursday, April 17, 2025, the Government of Belize has announced immediate enhancements to security protocols at all domestic airports across the country.

The announcement comes after Tropic Air flight 9N711, a Cessna 208EX Grand Caravan carrying 15 passengers and one pilot, was hijacked mid-flight. The aircraft had departed Ranchito Airport in Corozal at around 8:00 AM, en route to John Greif II Airport in San Pedro Town. During the flight, one passenger physically assaulted the pilot and attempted to take control of the plane.

The aircraft remained airborne for nearly 1 hour and 40 minutes, circling before making a safe emergency landing at the Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport. The hijacker was fatally shot upon landing. The pilot and two passengers were injured and are currently receiving medical attention, with all expected to recover.

In a press release issued by the Department of Civil Aviation, officials emphasized that while Belize has maintained a strong aviation safety record with over 120,000 domestic flights operated safely each year, this unprecedented event highlights the need for proactive changes.

Prior to this incident, local airstrips in Belize required no formal security screening—a reflection of the country’s reputation for safe and efficient domestic travel. However, in light of recent events, that policy is no longer deemed sufficient.

Effective immediately, enhanced security measures will be implemented at all domestic air terminals. These will include:

  • Passenger screening and baggage checks
  • Increased law enforcement presence at airstrips
  • Collaboration with specialized security service providers

Authorities noted that discussions on improving domestic airport security had already been underway prior to the hijacking. This incident accelerated those plans into immediate action.

The Department commended the exceptional professionalism of the pilot and the bravery of the passengers on board, whose actions helped avoid a potential tragedy.

The Government of Belize reaffirmed its commitment to the safety of all travelers, promising to refine and upgrade aviation security protocols to meet evolving international standards.
