By Horace Palacio: In Belize, Good Friday is more than just a public holiday—it’s a day steeped in spiritual reflection, cultural observance, and quiet tradition.

The morning often begins with a church service or the Stations of the Cross, where residents walk in solemn procession through their town or village, reenacting the final hours of Jesus Christ. The rest of the day is typically spent in calm, respectful silence. Bars are closed, and by law, the sale of alcohol is prohibited. Even upbeat music and festive celebrations are paused.

By midday, many Belizeans retreat to riversides and seashores, not for partying, but for peace. Families picnic by the water, take in the calm, or prepare traditional fish-based meals like fried fish with flour tortillas, or fish seré. Out of tradition—and superstition—many avoid swimming, believing the sea “claims lives” on this holy day.

It’s a nationwide pause, where time slows down and the hustle of life is replaced with prayer, food, and family. For Belizeans, Good Friday is a moment of grounding, reminding all to honor their faith and reconnect with what matters most.
