By Zoila Palma: Today, U.S. President Donald Trump welcomed El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele to the White House highlighting the Central American leader’s growing role in the administration’s aggressive immigration crackdown.
Bukele has supported the U.S. by accepting deportees — including individuals the administration labels as violent gang members — as part of Trump’s goal to deport up to a million undocumented migrants.
According to CNN, Secretary of State Marco Rubio praised the partnership, calling it a “model for regional security.”
Bukele’s visit further cements his close ties to Trump, who lauded him as “fantastic” and thanked him for accepting “some of the most violent alien enemies.”
Bukele’s tough anti-gang stance, including the use of El Salvador’s CECOT mega-prison, has drawn international human rights criticism, but remains popular at home. Trump brushed off concerns, saying, “They have some very bad people in that prison.”
The visit also comes as legal battles unfold over deportations under the Alien Enemies Act.
The Supreme Court recently ordered the U.S. to facilitate the return of a wrongly deported Maryland man, though the administration says it’s not obligated to bring him back.
