By Zoila Palma:  As the Easter season approaches, the Belize Police Department is urging the public to prioritize safety on the roads, at home, and around water.

Road Safety:

Drivers are reminded not to drink and drive, and to plan ahead with a designated driver or alternate transport if consuming alcohol. Impairment from medication or drugs can also affect driving ability. Report suspicious drivers to 911 and stay alert for erratic behavior on the road. Cyclists should avoid riding drunk and wear reflective gear at night.

Home Security:

To prevent break-ins, lock all doors and windows, keep valuables out of sight, install outdoor lighting, and clear entrances of overgrown plants. Inform trusted neighbors if leaving home for extended periods.

Swimming Safety:

Always swim in designated areas and supervise children closely. Children should never swim alone and should wear life jackets if inexperienced—but supervision is key. Avoid distractions, and never swim after drinking alcohol. In emergencies, call 911 immediately.

The Police Department emphasizes that preparation and vigilance can save lives during the busy holiday season.
