By Breaking Belize News Staff: A man from the Lords Bank area of Ladyville was convicted in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court last Monday for assaulting his wife during a domestic dispute while under the influence of alcohol.
The convicted man, 36-year-old Jonathan Henry Reyes, appeared before a Senior Magistrate in Court #6, where he was read two criminal charges: common assault and harm. However, the charge of harm was withdrawn by the prosecutor, who stated that the facts of the case did not meet the legal requirements for that offense.
Reyes pleaded guilty to common assault, stating in court, “I love my wife. Yes, I was intoxicated. This is not me. I am so sorry.”
According to police reports, the incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 9, 2025. Reyes’ wife, a 35-year-old domestic worker, told authorities that upon arriving home, she found Reyes staggering and intoxicated. After a brief exchange, he became verbally abusive and physically struck her with her own handbag when she tried to walk away. She fled in fear and was eventually assisted by police near Mile 10 on the George Price Highway.
The woman also reported that over their nine-year relationship, Reyes had repeatedly threatened her, saying he would kill her if she ever left him for another man.
During his mitigation plea, Reyes admitted to having a drinking problem and claimed to be a “God-fearing” member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. He emphasized that this was his first conviction and described himself as a good person with a steady job.
In handing down the sentence, the Senior Magistrate noted that although Reyes pleaded guilty early and had no previous convictions, his intoxication and unprovoked assault were aggravating factors. She initially considered a fine of $500 but made several adjustments based on legal guidelines.
Reyes was ultimately fined $300, which he must pay by June 30, 2025. If he fails to pay, he will face three months’ imprisonment.
