By Horace Palacio: Police are investigating a string of license plate thefts that have affected multiple vehicles in southside Belize City. At least nine vehicles were targeted last week on Maris Deena Street, where thieves reportedly stole license plates and even two car batteries.
Commissioner of Police Chester Williams confirmed that the matter is being taken seriously and that officials are working with the traffic department to track any reapplications or suspicious activity. While the motive behind the thefts remains unclear, Williams outlined several theories.
He noted that in some cases, stolen plates might be used for criminal activity, such as being affixed to other vehicles used in crimes. In other cases, tourists may be purchasing local plates as novelty items—a trend that could pose legal and security risks.
“If you know of anyone selling license plates, it’s good to report it,” Williams urged. “Because it can also be another issue where the license plates have been stolen with the intent to commit crime.”
Motorists who have had their license plates stolen are encouraged to immediately report it to police and traffic authorities. Williams assured that any victim who follows the proper reporting procedures would be safeguarded in the event the stolen plate is linked to criminal activity.
