By Zoila Palma: China announced it will raise retaliatory tariffs on U.S. imports to 125%, up from the current 84%, in response to recent tariff increases by the Trump administration.
The new duties take effect April 12, Beijing’s finance ministry confirmed.
Blaming the U.S. for violating international trade rules and “basic economic laws,” China said it would no longer respond to future tariff hikes, citing a lack of market demand for American goods, FT reports.
The escalation comes amid shipping disruptions and market turmoil, as Trump’s aggressive tariff agenda continues to rattle global trade. China’s average tariff on U.S. products now stands at 147.6%, according to experts.
Chinese companies, including JD.com and Alibaba, are launching efforts to support exporters by shifting goods to the domestic market.
President Xi Jinping warned that “there are no winners in a tariff war,” calling for cooperation amid global uncertainty.
