By Horace Palacio: With the United States imposing new tariffs on imported goods, global markets are bracing for a wave of inflation—and Belize is not immune. The Leader of the Opposition, Tracy Panton, is calling for a unified national response to what she describes as an economic threat that could significantly raise the cost of living for Belizeans.
Speaking in response to a warning from CARICOM Chair Mia Mottley—who said the U.S. trade actions could push prices higher across the region—Panton said Belize must not sit idle.
“We need to pay attention to what is happening in the global context,” she said. “These new tariffs will raise the cost of living exponentially for Belizeans. It requires all of us to sit down and come up with a strategic and comprehensive plan.”
The impact, she warned, could be especially hard on the most vulnerable communities.
“It’s not just about economic theory—it’s about people trying to make ends meet at the supermarket, at the hardware store, or filling up their gas tanks,” she added.
Panton urged a bipartisan and cross-sectoral approach, calling on government leaders, the opposition, civil society, and the business community to pool their resources and ideas.
