By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belizean cyclists are excelling in the Tour of Jamaica, with G-Flow Cycling Team riders Jyven Gonzalez and Derrick Chavarria placing in the top three in the General Classification (GC) after two stages.
In the GC standings, Gonzalez holds an impressive third place, just 10 seconds behind the leader Róbigzon Leandro Ayola of Team Medellín – EPM of Colombia. Chavarria is not far behind, securing fourth place with a gap of 13 seconds to the top spot. The top five riders are completed by Jonathan Guatibonza of Nu Colombia in second place and Sten Verzijl of Global Cycling Team in fifth.
Stage 2, held on Saturday, Gonzalez had a stellar performance, finishing second in the stage. Chavarria followed with a strong sixth-place finish, while Carlton Robinson and Goran Gabourel of Anthony Mahler Digi Alliance came in at 26th and 54th, respectively.
Friday’s Stage 1 also brought success for Belize, with Chavarria achieving an excellent third place overall and claiming first in the Under-23 category, displaying his rising star potential.
“Continue to shine and show that cycling in Belize is getting better,” the Cycling Federation of Belize wrote on social media, proudly cheering on their athletes.
With two stages completed, Belizean riders are holding their own in the Tour of Jamaica.
