By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Premier League of Belize (PLB) Semifinals take center stage Friday night as San Pedro Pirates go all out in their quest to upset reigning champions Port Layola at Ambergris Stadium.

Port Layola, the top-seeded favorites, are looking to defend their title and are also hunting for their second Concacaf Central American Cup participation. However, the Pirates, who narrowly secured their playoff spot on goal difference, are determined to defy the odds and take down the powerhouse squad.

The two teams met twice in the regular season, with Port Layola claiming a 3-1 victory on February 16 in Belize City. But in their most recent battle last Saturday (March 29), San Pedro held firm at home, forcing a 0-0 stalemate. Now, with the championship dreams on the line, the Pirates have one more chance to prove their mettle.

Port Layola dominated the regular season, finishing with 24 points. Their lethal attack produced 23 goals, while their rock-solid defense conceded just six times in ten matches. As defending champions, they enter the playoffs as firm favorites.

Meanwhile, the Pirates fought hard to make it this far, gaining ten points while scoring 15 goals but conceding 17. That left them with a -2 goal difference but it wqs enough to overcome Belmopan FC. Their defense must hold strong against Port Layola’s potent offensive force on Friday night.

With Ambergris Stadium providing home-field advantage and the energy of their loyal fans behind them, San Pedro Pirates must deliver their best performance yet. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

Can San Pedro pull off a historic upset, or will Port Layola continue their march toward another championship?
