By Aaron Humes: Belize Defence Force (BDF) bomb experts were sent to Ambergris Caye this morning to disarm a live hand grenade found on the island.
In a routine search operation early this morning, a police team discovered a hand grenade in an abandoned building north of San Pedro. The operation took place shortly after 8 a.m. Commissioner of Police Chester Williams confirmed the discovery, stating, “That grenade is currently at a secure location.”
Williams assured that the grenade would be examined and destroyed in a controlled manner to ensure public safety.
Authorities have never satisfactorily explained how a batch of grenades went missing more than a decade ago from BATSUB Camp in Ladyville, while two were detonated with fatal results months apart in Belize City. Since then, several grenade finds have been made without further incident.
