Press Release
The Belize Forest Department joins the world in commemorating International Day of Forests 2025. In 2012, the United Nations Assembly declared March 21st as “International Day of Forests” with the objective of raising awareness of the importance of forest types and trees outside of forests.
This year’s theme, “Forests and Food,” promotes the crucial roles of forests in food security, nutrition, and livelihoods. In addition to providing food, fuel, income, and employment, forests support soil fertility, protect water resources, and offer habitats for biodiversity, including vital pollinators.
Forests provide numerous services, including fresh air, clean water, and recreational opportunities. In developed countries, up to 25% of all medicinal drugs are plant-based; in developing countries, the contribution is as high as 80%. Our forests provide those essential services necessary for our survival and sustenance, as well as a backdrop for our food security, climate regulation, and economic stability.
In Belize, our local communities have a direct link to forests for traditional medicine, and cultural and spiritual practices while serving as stewards of our forest resources. We can all continue to do our part in practicing the sustainable use of our forest resources to ensure our livelihoods.
The Forest Department is commemorating this day by once more pledging its commitment to restoring “greener spaces.” This year, the Forest Department has partnered with the Belmopan City Council, the National Climate Change Office, the Protected Areas Conservation Trust, and the Department of the Environment to plant timber, fruit trees, and ornamental plants in key areas to restore and beautify green spaces. To further encourage stewardship, the Forest Department is also hosting a “Forests and Food” photo competition and a high school trivia competition.
The public is encouraged to participate in community planting events, helping to foster a sense of stewardship for local ecosystems. By engaging citizens in these efforts, the Forest Department hopes to enhance awareness about the importance of forests and the critical role they play in our environment and well-being. By participating in tree-planting activities, we create healthier and more resilient communities.
