By Aaron Humes: For the first time in its independent history, Belize’s voter turnout at a general election failed to break 70 percent nationwide.

The final, unofficial tally by the Elections and Boundaries Department is 65.1 percent nationwide – 128,262 of 197,018 registered voters.

Corozal North finished with 80.2 percent voter turnout for best in the nation ahead of Corozal Southwest on 78.36 percent and Albert on 75.22 percent.

Port Loyola barely cleared 53 percent and the Stann Creek District lagged behind all day, with Stann Creek West finishing at 50.94 percent and Dangriga at 47.11 percent.

Early returns suggest a nip-and-tuck fight in the Albert Division, with Patrick Faber trailing in the Collet Division according to some reports and PUP candidates ahead in some other divisions.
