By Rubén Morales Iglesias: On General Elections Day 2025, the streets of Belize City were unusually quiet on Wednesday morning, a stark contrast to the anticipated fervour. The city resembled a quiet Sunday, save for the pockets of activity concentrated around polling stations.

While the incumbent People’s United Party (PUP) appeared to command a larger visible presence, their supporters gathered at the polling stations in numbers that surpassed the voters who leisurely arrived to cast their votes.

The United Democratic Party (UDP), plagued by internal strife and visible divisions, seemed to struggle to muster a similar level of outward enthusiasm, with the exception of the downtown area, where their numbers were more visible.

The UDP’s internal struggles, widely reported in the lead-up to the election, appeared to have dampened their supporters’ spirits. While pockets of red could be seen, their presence was noticeably less pronounced than that of the PUP’s blue-clad faithful. The infighting affected their campaign, leaving many wondering if they could mount a serious challenge to the incumbent party.

The PUP, on the other hand, projected an image of unity and confidence. Their supporters, while not overly exuberant, maintained a steady presence, their hopes pinned on a decisive victory.

Voter turnout is expected to rise in the late afternoon as time dwindles. The parties expect to garner more support by the time the polls close at 6:00 pm.
