Southside Belize City constituencies now leading voter turnout nationwide

By Aaron Humes: As of 10:30 a.m., the Elections and Boundaries Department reports 34,927 ballots cast or 17.73 percent of registered voters.

The top five voting constituencies at present are all located in Southside Belize City: Albert at 31.95 percent, Collet at 27.26 percent, Mesopotamia at 27.21 percent, Lake Independence at 26.9 percent and Queen’s Square at 25.67 percent. Four of those five constituencies are being defended by the United Democratic Party (UDP).

Speaking to Channel 7 News/XTV, Moses “Shyne” Barrow said he believes he has the support to hold on to his constituency and that the UDP are putting up a fight in the West and South, seeking a massive upset. Barrow disparaged rivals Lawrence Ellis and Lee Mark Chang, claiming that his 2020 opponent Dr Candice Pitts put up more of a fight in a ‘tsunami’ year for the PUP and still lost by more than 250 votes; the best Ellis and Chang can do, he said, is take votes from each other.

Other UDP incumbents such as Tracey Taegar-Panton and Patrick Faber expressed similar sentiments in earlier interviews, saying they will withstand the ‘shock and awe’ of PUP troops flooding in from other constituencies seeking to crush what is left of the UDP.

Polls will close at 6 p.m.
