By Aaron Humes: The first of three murders in Belize City over the National Heroes and Benefactors Day weekend took the life of Mark Usher, a resident of the Fabers Road Extension area.

While Usher himself faced no threat according to Commissioner of Police Chester Williams, authorities were seeking the major players in ‘tensions’ in the area through the Leadership Intervention Unit (LIU) following a report, only to see them apparently go into hiding.

Usher’s death, the Commissioner said, is a result of “… an issue between the two groups in that area…That area has been an issue for some time now, with tensions between the two groups that operate in that area…”

Usher was targeted as he arrived home on Saturday night; Andre Andrews was charged with the murder.

Subsequently, a grandmother’s house in the area was “shot up”, and the death of Rafael Caceres on Sunday was confirmed to be direct retaliation. More on this in a subsequent story.
