By Horace Palacio: Prime Minister John Briceño may not be leaving politics anytime soon.
Just last month, the PM publicly declared that the upcoming general elections would be his last, but during an appearance on Wednesday’s episode of Uncut with Jules Vasquez, he backtracked on that statement, hinting that he might seek a third term.
Briceño explained that while he initially considered stepping down, he now believes that his continued presence is necessary to ensure a proper succession plan within the People’s United Party (PUP). He pointed to the United Democratic Party’s (UDP) internal struggles, blaming them on the lack of a clear leadership transition.
“I figured, but in reflection, I have a responsibility to our party and our government. When you look at 2008, there was no succession plan, and we ended up giving Mr. Barrow three terms,” Briceño said.
Pressed by Jules Vasquez on whether he was hedging on his decision, Briceño admitted:
“Yes, I am hedging. Not because I want to, but because I have to.”
With this latest revelation, the 2025 general election may not be Briceño’s last after all, and Belizeans could see his name on the ballot once again in 2030.
