By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City couple is back behind bars after 20-year-old Dejon Medwood, who initially pleaded guilty to possession of illegal ammunition, changed his plea to not guilty in court on Friday.

Medwood and his 45-year-old girlfriend, Deborah Sutherland, both residents of #8 Mahogany Street, were jointly charged with keeping ammunition without a gun license after police discovered 34 rounds at their home. When they first appeared in court on March 5, 2025, Medwood pleaded guilty while Sutherland maintained her innocence. However, the charge against her remained active until Medwood’s sentencing was finalized.

On Friday morning, when Medwood requested a sentencing indication from Senior Magistrate of Court #3, he learned that he was facing a prison term of three and a half years. Following this revelation, he promptly changed his plea to not guilty.

Attorney Orson “OJ” Elrington, who was hired to represent the couple at sentencing, had initially requested a non-custodial sentence for Medwood, citing his status as a first-time offender. However, with Medwood rejecting the sentencing terms and reverting to a not guilty plea, both he and Sutherland were remanded to the Belize Central Prison until their next court date on June 4, 2025.

Elrington has already begun the bail application process for the couple, and their request could be heard as early as Friday, March 14, 2025.

The couple’s arrest stemmed from a police operation on the night of March 4, 2025. Officers from the Gang Intelligence, Investigation, and Interdiction Unit (GI3), led by Corporal Kan, were conducting investigations in connection with a shooting on Vernon Street. Their inquiries led them to #8 Mahogany Street, where Medwood was identified as a suspect.

Upon arriving at the residence, officers were met by Sutherland, who opened the door. Medwood was inside, and the police informed them that a search would be conducted for illegal drugs, firearms, and ammunition. During the search of a bedroom, officers found a box of 34 rounds of ammunition concealed in a ceramic-wrapped package inside a drum filled with clothes.

With both defendants now pleading not guilty, the case is set for further proceedings in the coming months while they await the outcome of their bail application.
