By Breaking Belize News Staff: Josue Sic, 45, began serving a two-year prison sentence late this evening after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a 5-year-old girl. Chief Magistrate Jayani Wegodapola handed down the sentence, which took immediate effect.
The conviction stemmed from an incident on December 17, 2023, when the victim’s father, who considered Sic a friend, left his three daughters in Sic’s care. Upon returning home around 1:30 a.m., the father found Sic lying on the floor next to his daughters and noticed his 5-year-old daughter’s underwear was pulled down. During the trial, the father testified to finding a sticky substance, which he identified as semen, on his daughter’s leg. He immediately reported the incident to the police.
Sic was arraigned and remanded on December 19, 2023. In the trial, the Chief Magistrate stated that she found the father’s testimony credible, as the defense failed to undermine it. Sic called one character witness, a former employer.
Senior Counsel Simeon Sampson, Sic’s attorney, expressed his intention to appeal the conviction, stating that the evidence presented by the Crown did not justify a guilty verdict. Sic faced a maximum sentence of seven years.
Initially remanded to the Belize Central Prison after the guilty verdict, Sic’s mitigation plea was scheduled for Monday, March 3, 2025. However, following the sentencing, he was immediately taken into custody to begin his two-year term.
