By Breaking Belize News Staff: A couple is behind bars tonight after police discovered 34 live rounds of 9mm ammunition inside their home during an investigation into a recent shooting.

The suspects have been identified as 45-year-old Deborah Sutherland, a dietary aid at Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH), and her 20-year-old boyfriend, Dejon Medwood, a fisherman. The pair were taken into custody and charged with kept ammunition without a gun license.

Appearing unrepresented before a Senior Magistrate in Court #3 this afternoon, Medwood immediately took responsibility for the ammunition, stating, “My girlfriend had no knowledge of the ammunition being there.” After confirming his admission, the court accepted his guilty plea. However, Medwood requested time to call character witnesses before sentencing, leading the magistrate to adjourn the matter to Friday, March 7, 2025.

Despite Medwood’s plea, the charge against Sutherland has not yet been withdrawn, leading to both being remanded at the Belize Central Prison. Sutherland broke down in tears upon hearing the ruling and suffered an asthma attack in court, desperately pleading for bail due to her medical condition.

“I need my asthma machine because at night it gets worse for me. I don’t know how I will do it back in jail because I hear it gets hot in there,” she pleaded.

However, the magistrate explained that bail could not be granted due to the severity of the offense. A notation was made on her prison warrant regarding her condition, but she remains in custody until Friday’s sentencing.

According to police reports, officers were investigating a March 4, 2025, shooting on Vernon Street when they were led to Medwood’s residence on Mahogany Street. Upon arrival, Sutherland opened the door, allowing officers inside, where they found Medwood.

A search of the house, specifically a drum of clothes in the bedroom, led to the discovery of a box of ammunition wrapped in ceramic and a smaller bag. With no firearm found, both occupants were detained and later charged.

The case is set to continue on March 7, 2025, when Medwood will be sentenced and a final decision on Sutherland’s charge is expected.
