By Horace Palacio: Tensions between Guyana and Venezuela have escalated once again after a Venezuelan Coast Guard vessel entered Guyanese waters on Saturday morning, broadcasting warnings to vessels operating in the area. The act has raised serious security concerns for CARICOM nations, including Belize, which has faced its own territorial disputes in the past.
Guyanese President Dr. Irfaan Ali addressed the nation, describing the incursion as a violation of international law and reaffirming Guyana’s sovereign rights. The Venezuelan warship approached offshore oil vessels in the Stabroek block and declared over the radio that the waters were disputed territory before moving on. This follows a separate attack last week, in which six Guyanese soldiers were shot while patrolling the Cuyuni River, a border area also contested by Venezuela.
The Guyanese government has responded by alerting CARICOM, the United Nations, and international allies, as well as summoning Venezuela’s ambassador to formally object to the aggression. Increased surveillance by the Guyana Coast Guard has been ordered, ensuring the protection of vessels operating in the country’s economic zone.
While the incident directly affects Guyana, Belizeans should take note, as the region is witnessing a dangerous trend of military threats over territorial disputes. With Belize’s long history of tensions with Guatemala, Venezuela’s bold disregard for international rulings should serve as a warning that small nations must remain vigilant.
As CARICOM continues diplomatic efforts, Belize and its regional allies must ensure that border security remains a top priority.
