By Horace Palacio: Prime Minister John Briceño ridiculed UDP’s Dean Samuels after he failed to show up on Nomination Day, handing an uncontested victory to PUP’s Anthony Mahler in the Pickstock division.
Samuels cited fainting spells as the reason for his absence, sending in a doctor’s letter instead. However, Briceño openly mocked the excuse, questioning why Samuels could not have simply signed his nomination papers beforehand.
Briceño suggested that Samuels likely withdrew out of fear of losing, stating, “It is obvious that Mr. Samuels realized that there’s no way that he could win Anthony Mahler and figured why would I embarrass myself?”
The UDP’s failure to field a candidate in Pickstock is part of a larger issue, as the party also failed to contest Fort George, Dangriga, and Toledo East, handing the PUP an advantage even before votes are cast.
As the March 12 elections approach, Samuels’ withdrawal adds to the UDP’s ongoing leadership crisis and internal divisions, making their path to victory even more uncertain.
