By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Derrick Chavarría, riding for Cayman’s Phoenix International, finished 45th out of 122 riders in the first stage of the 46th Vuelta Ciclística Independencia in the Dominican Republic. Despite the challenging 123 km route from Santo Domingo to Baní and back to Santo Domingo, Chavarría displayed his potential by finishing 11th in the Under 23 category out of 44 participants. His time of 2:29:28 was 4 minutes and 43 seconds behind stage winner Robigzon Oyola of Colombia’s Team Medellín, who clocked in at 2:24:45.
Phoenix International placed 11th, out of 21 teams, with a combined time of 7:25:07, just 7 minutes and 5 seconds behind the leading team, Medellín, which led with 7:18:02.
The tour started on Monday, February 24, and will run until Sunday, March 2. In the general classification, Oyola’s teammate Óscar Sevilla finished second, one minute and 36 seconds behind, while Gene Meving from CSCA SACI Proprete 2000 secured third, with the same time as Sevilla.
Stage 1 produced an average speed of 50.98 km/h. The day’s highlights included the leaders in various categories:
– General Leader: Robigzon Oyola (Team Medellín)
– Regularity Leader: Robigzon Oyola (Team Medellín)
– Mountain Leader: Yesid Pira (Inteja/IMCA)
– Best Under-23: Palmiste Philgy (CSCA SACI Proprete 2000)
– Best Dominican: Alberto Rafael Ramos (El Boro Cycling Team)
– Team Classification: Team Medellín
As Stage 2 unfolds today, Chavarría and his team continue to strive for excellence in this prestigious international competition.
