PUP may win two seats by default after UDP candidates fail to nominate

By Horace Palacio: The People’s United Party (PUP) is on the brink of securing two Belize City constituencies without a contest after United Democratic Party (UDP) candidates failed to appear for nomination day.

According to reliable sources, UDP candidates Melvin Hewlett (Fort George) and Dean Samuels (Pickstock) did not show up to file their nominations despite attending the party’s candidate launch on Saturday. Attempts by UDP leader Shyne Barrow’s secretariat to reach them were reportedly unsuccessful.

With Tracy Panton’s Alliance for Democracy (AFD) fielding no candidates in these constituencies and no independent contenders registered, the absence of UDP candidates would mean automatic wins for the current PUP area representatives. In such cases, the returning officer would declare the uncontested candidates as the winners.

The no-show comes as a setback for the UDP, which had been aiming to mount a strong challenge in Belize City. Political observers now see this development as a boost to the PUP, solidifying its chances in the upcoming general elections.
