By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize High School of Agriculture (BHSA) captured the Northern High School Football Championship on Saturday, February 8, at the Orange Walk People’s Stadium. The event was organized by the Northern Secondary Schools Sports Association (NSSSA).
Zone 3 champions BHSA edged out Zone 2 champions Bishop Martin High School (BMHS) 1-0 in a hard-fought final to win the northern tournament.
BHSA’s Erwin Cho was voted Most Valuable Player of the Tournament.
In the semifinals, BMHS defeated Zone 4 champions San Pedro High School (SPHS) 2-0 to advance to the final. Meanwhile, BHSA overcame Zone 1 champions Escuela Secundaria Técnica México (ESTM) 4-2 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in regulation.
Escuela Secundaria Técnica Mexico secured third place due to a better record than San Pedro High.
With this victory, BHSA will represent the North in the National Secondary Schools Sports Association (NSSSA) tournament, which will be hosted by Mount Carmel High School in Benque Viejo del Carmen on Friday, February 21.
Corozal Community College (CCC) won the girls’ championship.
The tournament’s results for the girls’ matches was as follows:
- Semifinal 1: BMHS 2-0 SPHS
- Semifinal 2: BHSA 1-1 (4-2 pks) ESTM
- Final: BHSA 1-0 BMHS
