By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belizean athletes won seven medals at the 2025 Winter Athletics Championship (Campeonato Invernal Pista y Campo 2025), sanctioned by World Athletics, in Mérida, Mexico. The team brought home an impressive haul of seven medals, cementing their status as formidable competitors in the regional tournament.
Nyasha Harris led the charge with stellar performances in the U20 Female category, securing gold medals in both the 100m and 200m events. Shaun Gill followed suit, earning a gold medal in the 100m Open Men’s category. The Belizean team also struck gold in the 4x100m Relay Men’s Open, with a strong performance by Jalen O’Brien, Gill, Donovan Grinage Jr., and Usher.
Usher added a silver medal in the 200m Open Men’s category, showcasing his versatility and speed.
Bronze medals were secured by Usher in the 100m Open Men’s category and Grinage in the 400m Hurdles Open Men’s event.
Usher said special mention must be made of coach Shelmadine Carr for her dedication and guidance, as well as to athlete Juan Portillo, who competed in the shot put and javelin events, placing 4th and 5th respectively.
These athletes have made Belize proud in Mexico and their hard work and commitment should be recognized.
