By Zoila Palma: Mexico has started deploying 10,000 troops to its northern border in response to a deal with President Donald Trump to delay tariffs, AFP reports.
President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that the deployment, aimed at combating illegal migration and fentanyl smuggling, had already begun.
Troops, including members of the National Guard, were seen heading to border cities like Tijuana and Ciudad Juarez. “There will be patrols along the entire US-Mexico border,” said National Guard coordinator Jose Luis Santos.
Authorities from both countries also launched a joint operation in Ciudad Juarez to investigate a possible migrant tunnel. While a storm drain was found, it did not lead into U.S. territory.
The deployment follows Trump’s announcement of tariffs on Mexico, which were delayed after both countries reached an agreement. Sheinbaum assured that the deployment would not leave other parts of Mexico unprotected, despite security challenges.
