By Horace Palacio: Discontent among Belizean teachers is growing as educators at St. Andrew’s Anglican School in San Ignacio, Cayo sent students home on Friday in protest of unpaid salary increments. Reports indicate that while some schools under the same management have received their payments, others, including St. Andrew’s, have not. Frustrated with the delays, teachers decided to take action, calling parents to pick up their children early.

The situation comes amid wider unrest within the education sector, with the Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) issuing a memo to teachers across the country. The memo emphasizes that over 600 teachers are still awaiting their increments and allowances, calling the situation unacceptable.

As part of their response, the union has organized a national protest rally set to take place in Belmopan at the UB Gymnasium on Friday, February 7, 2025, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The protest aims to publicly highlight their dissatisfaction and demand immediate action from education authorities.

The growing frustration among teachers signals potential further disruptions if their concerns remain unaddressed. Meanwhile, a House Meeting has also been scheduled for the same date, setting the stage for a major day of demonstrations and discussions on the issue.

This is a developing story, and further updates will follow as more details emerge.
