By Aaron Humes: 23-year-old Honduran national, Luis Enriquez Avila, is currently in custody at the Belize Central Prison after pleading guilty to charges of illegal entry into Belize. This follows his arrest on January 27, following an incident that occurred on August 10, 2024, when he crossed the Mopan River in Benque Viejo Del Carmen, an area not designated as an approved point of entry.
During his arraignment, Avila, who appeared without legal representation, admitted to the single charge of illegal entry. After a brief hearing, he was fined $1,000 and court costs, both of which he paid immediately. Although Avila tried to negotiate an agreement with the Immigration Department that might allow him to remain in the country, this was not possible as his case was already advanced in court.
In a desperate plea, Avila addressed the Senior Magistrate, asking if there was any opportunity for him to stay in Belize. However, with the court’s decision now final, he faces deportation back to Honduras.
