By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Data from the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) showed that for the month of December, higher food prices were notable.
The inflation rate for ‘Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages’ stood at 5 percent for the month, largely due to higher prices for food items.
The cost of fresh vegetables rose by a whopping 10%.
Particularly the prices of okra went from $3.08 to $3.76 per pound and carrots went from $2.77 to $3.00 per pound.
In addition, the price of broccoli/ cauliflower went from $4.68 to $5.33 per pound.
The price of cabbage also went from $2.35 per pound to $3.27.
Corn also noted price increases from $7.08 to $7.48 for 3 units.
Overall consumer prices were up 2.6% in December.
