By Zoila Palma: Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te has called on global organizations to stop excluding Taiwan for political reasons, in a letter to Pope Francis, Reuters report.
Lai echoed the Pope’s message from his World Day of Peace speech, agreeing that challenges like food crises and climate change should be tackled collaboratively and not as isolated issues.
Lai expressed concern over Taiwan’s exclusion from most international organizations due to pressure from China, which claims Taiwan as part of its territory.
He also referenced the Pope’s stance on peace, emphasizing that “war has no winners” and that international consensus supports peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
The Vatican maintains formal ties with Taiwan, one of only 12 countries that does so, while also engaging with China, which extended an accord with the Holy See in October on the appointment of Catholic bishops in China.
