By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belizean community bid farewell to Eric Gilbert Neal, Sr., who was laid to rest on Tuesday, January 28, 2025. Known for his unwavering commitment to discipline and his devout Catholic faith, Neal was a no-nonsense teacher who left an indelible mark on the lives of many.
Eric Neal was an outstanding Belizean basketball coach, physical education teacher, umpire, referee, and mentor. He dedicated his life to shaping young minds and athletes, leaving a lasting impact on St. Ignatius Parish/School, St. John’s College, and the many communities he served. His passion for teaching and leadership both on and off the field earned him the respect and admiration of all who knew him.
“He was known for his unwavering commitment to discipline, his passion for teaching, and his leadership both on and off the field,” his family said in a social media post.
“As a coach in softball and basketball, Neal instilled values of hard work, integrity, and respect in everyone he worked with.”
Neal’s family acknowledged the Belize Softball Federation, Eglah’s Training Center, St. Ignatius Parish, and his past students of St. Ignatius and St. John’s College for their support and contributions to Neal’s legacy.
Funeral services were held at the St. Ignatius RC Church in Belize City, where he served for many years. He was laid to rest at the Eternal Garden Memorial Cemetery at Mile 13 on the George Price Highway, Belize District.
