By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Mexico has started accepting non-Mexican deportees from the United States, reversing President Claudia Sheinbaum’s earlier opposition, Reuters report.
Over the past week, Mexico received more than 4,000 deportees, with the majority being Mexican nationals.
While Sheinbaum previously rejected the U.S.’s “Remain in Mexico” program, which would send non-Mexican migrants back to Mexico while awaiting U.S. processing, she confirmed the arrival of deportees on four civil aircraft flights.
However, a U.S. military deportation flight was reportedly denied.
This move comes amid tensions between the U.S. and other countries, including Brazil and Colombia, over deportation practices.
Mexico and the U.S. continue negotiations on immigration matters, with Sheinbaum acknowledging the potential for further agreements in the near future.
