By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Tijuana, a Mexican border town, has declared a state of emergency as it braces for a possible surge of migrants due to President Donald Trump’s mass deportation plan. More than 30 shelters in the city are struggling with limited space and resources, CNN reports.
Humanitarian workers express concern over the potential humanitarian crisis, particularly for both migrants heading to the U.S. and those being deported.
Trump reiterated his pledge for mass deportations during his inauguration, sparking fear of increased demand on Tijuana’s shelters.
The state of emergency allows the city to access funding for additional space and resources. However, Mayor Ismael Burgueño Ruiz called the measure “preventive” and said Tijuana is prepared for a potential influx.
Shelter leaders emphasize that providing basic needs like food and beds is not enough, with some calling for more psychological support and integration programs.
Authorities and shelters are working together to address these challenges, but the full scope of the migrant population remains unclear.
The Mexican government is also preparing new shelters and support for returning migrants.
