By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday to formally withdraw the U.S. from the World Health Organization (WHO), accusing the organization of “ripping off” the U.S, ABC reports.
The move finalizes his previous attempt in 2020, which was halted by President Biden.
The U.S. is the WHO’s largest funder, playing a key role in global health efforts, including collaborations on disease outbreaks and health research.
Trump’s decision marks the beginning of a yearlong withdrawal process, which could be completed by 2026.
Experts, including George Washington University professor Lawrence Gostin, warn that the move could weaken U.S. security, making the country less involved in global health initiatives like HIV prevention and disease eradication.
Trump defended the decision, claiming the U.S. was unfairly shouldering a disproportionate financial burden compared to other countries, including China.
Critics argue that cutting ties with the WHO will harm global health and U.S. interests, despite calls for reform within the organization.
