By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Mexico is building large tent shelters in Ciudad Juarez to prepare for a potential influx of deported Mexicans under U.S. President Donald Trump’s mass deportation plans, Reuters report.
The shelters, which will house thousands, are part of a broader strategy to create reception centers across nine northern Mexican cities.
Officials said the shelters will offer food, medical care, temporary housing, and assistance with identity documents for deported individuals.
A fleet of buses will be ready to transport them back to their hometowns. These preparations come as Trump vows to deport millions of immigrants, many from areas in Mexico affected by violence and poverty.
While the Mexican government claims it is ready, immigration advocates have raised concerns about the country’s ability to handle the potential flood of deportations, especially as the U.S. reinstates the “Remain in Mexico” policy.
Economic challenges in Mexico could complicate efforts to absorb deported migrants, with rural areas heavily reliant on remittances from the U.S. set to face further strain.
