By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order suspending all U.S. foreign assistance programs for 90 days, pending a review to align them with his policy goals, AP reports.
The order, signed on his first day in office, criticizes the “foreign aid industry” for not serving U.S. interests and asserts that some programs destabilize global peace.
The review will be led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is tasked with determining whether each program aligns with U.S. foreign policy priorities.
While some foreign aid programs, such as long-term funding to Israel and Egypt, are unlikely to see immediate changes, other areas like U.N. agencies and humanitarian efforts could face cuts.
Trump has long criticized foreign aid, despite its small share of the federal budget, and his administration previously suspended payments to various U.N. agencies.
The review will focus on whether aid contributes to U.S. safety, strength, and prosperity.
