By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Taiwan has reported a sharp increase in suspected espionage cases linked to China, with the number of individuals charged rising threefold in recent years.

The National Security Bureau (NSB) revealed in a report on Sunday that prosecutions surged from 16 in 2021 to 64 in 2024.

Among those charged, 15 were military veterans and 28 were active service members, CNN reports.

The targets of these alleged espionage activities included military units, government agencies, and local organizations.

This rise coincides with growing pressure from Beijing, which claims Taiwan as its own and has ramped up military drills and “gray zone” tactics, including subthreshold actions that don’t trigger full-scale conflict.

Taiwan’s security agencies have warned of increasing Chinese attempts to infiltrate its armed forces, often through bribery or recruitment of military personnel and local groups.

The report highlights improved counter-intelligence efforts in Taiwan, which have uncovered cases of Chinese agents attempting to establish networks within criminal gangs, temples, and underground financial systems.

Some suspected spies were allegedly tasked with sabotage or gathering intelligence for future Chinese military operations.

Taiwan’s defense experts are urging heightened vigilance, stressing the importance of secure communications and caution with social media to prevent further infiltration.
