By Zoila Palma Gonzalez:The Dominican Republic deported over 276,000 Haitians in 2024, according to the country’s Immigration Directorate, CNN reports.
The majority of deportations occurred in the final quarter of the year, with more than 94,000 people removed under a new operation targeting up to 10,000 undocumented migrants per week.
From January to September, 48,344 Haitians were deported in the first quarter, 62,446 in the second, and 71,414 in the third.
Government officials cited an “excess” of Haitian migrants as the reason for the surge in deportations, which have faced criticism from Haiti.
Former Foreign Minister Dominique Dupuy condemned the actions as “dehumanizing,” while Dominican authorities insist they are conducted in line with human rights.
These deportations occur amid escalating gang violence and political instability in Haiti, where gangs control much of the capital, Port-au-Prince.
