By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The 34th KREM New Year’s Day Cycling Classic, a celebrated event in Belize’s sports calendar, once again showcased exceptional talent and fierce competition among its participants. This year’s race, held on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, Cory featured Elite Special Prizes that highlighted the riders’ performances.

Derrick Chavarria of the G-Flow Cycling Team distinguished himself by winning two prizes: the Most Aggressive Rider, sponsored by the Alfred Parks Foundation, and the First Belizean to cross Haulover Bridge, sponsored by the Leader of the Opposition, Shyne Barrow, each earning him $500.00 in cash.

“First race for the year done. The gloomy weather made the race exciting until it started pouring down on us about halfway in the race. Fitness loading well after the off-season,” Derrick posted on Instagram.

“Finished with a 6th this year with a few mishaps before and during the race. Nonetheless we adapted to get the day over with. CHAV’s never give up.”

The New Year’s Classic champion, Cory Williams of the Miami Blazers, also made an impressive mark by being the First Belizean to cross the finish line, winning two cash prizes.
