By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: A car-ramming attack at a Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany, on Friday evening killed 5 people and injured over 200, with 40 in critical condition, Reuters report.
Authorities are investigating a Saudi man, Taleb A., a 50-year-old doctor with a history of anti-Islam rhetoric, as the suspect. He was arrested at the scene, and police have searched his home.
The attack has intensified debates on security and migration, particularly ahead of Germany’s upcoming snap elections.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz condemned the act, while Interior Minister Nancy Faeser noted the suspect’s Islamophobia but refrained from commenting on the motive.
A Saudi source said that the attacker had been flagged multiple times by Saudi authorities for extremist views.
Despite this, German officials had deemed him not a specific threat after a risk assessment.
The far-right AfD party condemned the attack, using it to fuel their calls for stricter migration controls.
