By Breaking Belize News Staff: Shane Roman Jones, a well-known resident of the Conch Shell Bay area, was found guilty of manslaughter in the death of 49-year-old Edwin Usher, who died from blunt force trauma after a brutal beating in 2019. Jones, initially charged with murder, was convicted after a trial where video footage of the incident played a crucial role in the court’s decision.
The incident occurred on November 23, 2019, at the corner of Vernon Street and Woods Street, during a confrontation between Jones and Usher. While Jones claimed self-defense, the court rejected this argument, ruling that the force he used was excessive and unjustifiable. Video footage captured Jones beating Usher, first with punches and later by stomping on his head while Usher was motionless on the ground.
Justice Nigel Pilgrim, who delivered the verdict, noted that while Jones may have felt threatened by Usher, the level of force used was disproportionate to any perceived threat. The judge highlighted the graphic nature of the footage, where Jones was seen repeatedly hitting Usher in the head, even after he had fallen to the ground.
Usher, who lost consciousness after the beating, managed to walk home but died in the hospital on November 30, 2019, from the injuries sustained during the attack. A post-mortem revealed that Usher died from intracranial hemorrhaging due to blunt force trauma to the head.
Jones, who was represented by Attorney Norman Moore, will remain behind bars pending sentencing. He faces up to 25 years in prison for manslaughter, a charge downgraded from murder due to the court’s assessment of his actions.
