Flood Forecast Issued by the Hydrology Unit of the Ministry of Natural Resources

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Hydrology Unit of the Ministry of Natural Resources, Petroleum, and Mining has issued a comprehensive flood forecast for various regions across Belize, effective as of noon today. The forecast highlights significant flood warnings and advisories for multiple rivers and regions, urging residents to exercise caution and stay informed.
Alerts and Warnings:
- Flood Warning: A flood warning remains active for the Sibun River at Freetown Sibun.
- Severe Flood Warning: A severe flood warning remains in effect for the Belize River and its tributaries. The Crooked Tree Road is currently impassable for small vehicles, and caution is advised for all other drivers.
Region 7:
- Rio Hondo: Above normal levels are expected at Blue Creek North, Santa Cruz, and San Antonio, while normal levels are anticipated at San Roman and Douglas to the coast.
- New River: Above normal levels are predicted to persist at Hill Bank, Tower Hill, and at Caledonia to the coast.
Region 9:
- Residents are advised to monitor waterways and exercise extreme caution.
- Mopan River: Flood stage levels are expected to continue at Benque Viejo del Carmen.
- Macal River: At FORTIS Facilities, Chalillo, Mollejon, and VACA spillways are active; at San Ignacio, increasing levels are anticipated.
- Belize River: Increasing levels are expected at More Tomorrow; flood stage levels are expected to persist at Double Run. Historical Hurricane Mitch flood levels are expected to continue on the Crooked Tree Lagoon.
Region 11:
- Residents are advised to monitor waterways and exercise extreme caution.
- Sibun River: Flood stage levels are expected to persist at Freetown Sibun. Above normal levels are expected to continue on the Southern Lagoon at Gales Point Village.
- In watersheds on the eastern slopes of the Maya Mountains and the Sittee River at Kendal Bridge, above normal levels are expected.
- Monkey River: Above normal levels are expected at Swasey and Bladen. Above normal levels are also expected on the Deep River at Medina Bank.
- Rio Grande: Above normal levels are expected at San Pedro Columbia and Big Falls South. Normal levels are expected on the Moho River at Blue Creek South and Jordan, as well as on the Temash River at Crique Sarco.
- Moho River: Above normal levels are expected at Blue Creek South and normal levels at Jordan.
- Temash River: Normal levels are expected at Crique Sarco.
Region 13:
- Sarstoon River: Above normal levels are expected.
Residents are urged to stay updated with the latest forecasts and take necessary precautions to ensure safety. The Hydrology Unit will provide further updates as necessary.
