By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Osiel Cárdenas Guillén, 57, the notorious founder of the Los Zetas drug cartel, has been deported to Mexico after serving a lengthy prison sentence in the United States.
Cárdenas led Los Zetas until 2003, turning the group into one of Mexico’s most feared and violent cartels.
Captured in 2003 after a gun battle with Mexican soldiers, Cárdenas was extradited to the U.S. in 2007, where he was convicted of drug trafficking and threatening federal agents, BBC reports.
He served 25 years and was released in August 2024 before being handed over to Mexican authorities.
Upon arrival in Mexico, Cárdenas was re-arrested on charges of murder and organized crime linked to his criminal activities.
Mexican prosecutors have seven open federal cases against him, and if convicted, he faces over 700 years in prison.
