The U.N. is highlighting the invaluable contributions of millions of migrants around the world.
It is a day to recognize the complex realities of migration, shaped by ongoing conflicts, climate disasters, and economic pressures that drive people from their homes in search of safety and opportunity.
This past year has seen record levels of internal displacement, rising humanitarian needs, and, tragically, the highest death toll of migrants in transit.
Yet amid these challenges, stories of resilience, hope, and progress emerge.
When migration is managed safely and strategically, it unlocks extraordinary potential, with migrants playing crucial roles in labor markets, addressing demographic challenges in aging societies, and driving economic growth.
The U.N. noted that migrants not only fill critical skills gaps and foster innovation but also contribute to development by sending remittances that support families and communities back home.
The U.N. reports that since 2014, almost 70,000 migrants have lost their lives or gone missing while attempting to cross land and sea routes, with the true number likely much higher.
“Each death represents a tragic loss, deeply affecting families and communities. This silent humanitarian crisis demands urgent action,” the U.N. noted.
The U.N. says that when migration is handled in a safe and well-managed manner, it can be a force for good.
The UN calls for regular migration pathways that protect migrant rights and contribute to prosperity for both host countries and those of origin.
“Together, we can build a world where migration is safe, orderly, and beneficial for all,” the U.N. said.
