By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Government of Belize (GOB), through the Ministry of Economic Development (MED), has launched the six-year Resilient Rural Belize (RRB) Programme, with BZ$50 million in financing from IFAD, GCF, CDB, and beneficiaries.

The programme aims to mitigate climate and economic impacts on small farmers while enhancing sustainable market access.

In August 2023, RRB/MED signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Pesticide Control Board (PCB) to fund pesticide management training for approximately 300 farmers, along with equipment including PPEs, storage and collection units, bio beds, measuring cups, training materials, and completion certificates.

Due to rising costs, the MOA was extended for BZ$79,000 to provide equipment and fund the completion certificates ceremony in January 2025.

In October 2022, RRB/MED signed another MOA with the National Meteorological Service (NMS) to develop a Climate Information System (CIS) that will provide farmers with timely climate data through a mobile app.

The app will offer insights on irrigation, pest risks, weather forecasts, and real-time monitoring. A no-cost extension of this MOA was granted to finalize the app by October 2025.

The MOA extensions were signed by Acting CEO of Ministry Carlos Pol, alongside Gareth Murillo, PCB Chairman, and Ronald Gordon Chief Meteorologist.
