By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Government of Belize has clarified that the General Sales Tax (GST) waiver, which began today applies to both cash and card purchases.
For the first time, GST will be waived on local retail sales of all standard-rated goods during the waiver days—December 14, 15, 21, and 22, 2024—subject to certain exceptions.
Belizeans can shop across the country without paying the usual 12.5% tax on most goods.
Additionally, picnic shoulder hams, smoked ham legs, and imported turkeys are zero-rated for the entire month of December.
However, the waiver only applies to immediate retail purchases and does not cover items bought on credit, layaway, hire purchase, wholesale, or consignment.
In response to reports of confusion over card payments, the Government issued a flyer confirming that the GST waiver applies regardless of purchases made using cash or card.
Shoppers are taking advantage of the GST-free days, with many purchasing groceries, home appliances, and more.
